Look for our new tools to increase accessibility thanks to the ALA!

Writer: Jennifer EnsignJennifer Ensign

As a recipient of the $10,000 American Library Association’s Libraries Transforming Communities: Accessible Small and Rural Communities initiative, the Cameron Public Library has purchased some amazing sensory equipment for our children’s department. Over $2,000 of equipment has been introduced to families during this week’s story time and home school connect program. When asked what her favorite was, 4-year-old Samara stated, “The (sensory) mats I could walk on.” Other new items include a peanut-shaped balance ball, a floor mirror, and a light-up tap sphere. In addition to these fun resources, the grant funded an automatic restroom door and an adult changing table in our library.

This grant is an opportunity for our library to enhance its role as a valuable

community resource, catering to the diverse needs and interests of all residents.

Starting February 3rd , our children’s area will be undergoing a renovation. Books for kids 0 – 12 will be available throughout the main areas of the library, but there will be no access to the back of the library and meeting rooms. Following project completion in April, we look forward to providing sensory storytimes and other events that cater to our sensory-seeking patrons.

Libraries Transforming Communities: Accessible Small and Rural Communities is an initiative of the American Library Association (ALA) in collaboration with the Association for Rural & Small Libraries (ARSL).”
